Jane Halsey and her sister Belle were living with an aunt in London—and Jane knew it was time to think seriously about marrying a rich husband. But handsome, eccentric and rich Lord Romeo, who extolled all things Greek, did not fit her notions of a proper husband. Now his brother, Lord Renfrew, on the other hand, was her ideal—and way above her touch. Regency Romance by Joan Smith; originally published by Fawcett Crest

Lovers' Quarrels edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks

Joan Smith has put Romeo ( not a romeo but rather a guy named Romeo) in several of her stories and I've found him to be a half-wit irritation in all of them! He's in this one, too, and his exasperated family is trying to marry him off to our heroine, Jane. She certainly doesn't want him since he seems an idiot to her, too: but she does want his sensible older brother. She thinks the brother wants her but he is hoping she will marry Romeo and take him back to Greece and our of the family's lives. Things do get straightened out eventually but only after Romeo tries to steal the Elgin Marbles and return them to Greece. This story tries to be funny like a lot of other Joan Smith books but doesn't succeed.

Lovers' Quarrels edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks Reviews

This is not a true sequel to 'Babe', because it involves mostly different characters, but Babe tell the story of Romeo's kidnapping a girl & gives his character greater depth. If you like Joan Smith, you'll enjoy Lovers' Quarrels (no relation to the maligned play in Mansfield Park!). I disagree with the other reviewer that this is poorly written. Georgette Heyer is of course the very best Regency romance author, but from what I've read so far I think Joan Smith comes in as the enjoyable second (tied perhaps with Clare Darcy). Plus, as Smith was by far the more prolific, there's more of her books to enjoy.
good read, I enjoy reading this book.
Loved it. The dynamic among the H, h, and Lord Romeo is interesting and the characters all engaging, but especially Lord Romeo...one of the most hysterical characters I can recall from either Smith or another favorite author, Barbara Metzger. If you like regency romance with a touch of the absurd for laughs, this is a good pick.
Brilliant as Lord Romeo makes a return appearance - he was in "Babe" an equally excellent read. This is absolutely one of Joan Smith's better efforts and enjoyable from start to finish!
When I want a light read with a good laugh I can usually count on this author to provide both. There is always at least one character who will keep you in stitches. Lord Romeo provided the laughs and the banter between the hero and heroine was excellent. Loved it!
Not my favorite Joan Smith book. I found main characters annoying. Sorry 5 stars showing. My iPad refuses to do three stars
If you enjoyed Romeo's antics in Babe, then you must read this book. Romeo had some hilarious lines in Babe, but more than his lines, one can't help but wonder about Joan Smith's genius in coming up with such a well developed character. In fact, although Romeo isn't the primary character in this book nor was he the prime character in Babe - yet, he's certainly a standout and quite literally steals the show in both books.

In this book, we have Jane Halsey and her sister, Belle, living with their Aunt Pettigrew in London after their circumstances have dramatically changed following the death of their father. Yes, Jane has an excellent dowry, but the beautiful Belle has none. Plus, due to the mourning period following their father's death, they haven't been able to take advantage of the Season's social events - thus neither of them have the connections required to make an excellent match.

Into this mix, comes Lord Renfrew, Romeo's older brother, James, who believes the stalwart Jane is just the woman to keep Romeo firmly in hand. When he and his mother hatch up a plot to snag Jane for Romeo, Renfrew must needs babysit the affair until everything comes to fruition. Problem is - Jane is under the impression that Renfrew wants her and she attempts to set Belle onto Romeo. As usual Romeo is single minded about what he wants and no other will do besides lovely Athene - that would be Jane. And, if you know anything about Romeo - what Romeo wants, he will manage to contrive a way to get. But... when Jane finds out she's been used and abused by Renfrew, the fat is in the proverbial fire and that is that. A little too late in the game, Renfrew realizes he's been a dolt, but how to get back in the game is the question with Jane giving him the icy freeze. Of course Romeo is such a multi-faceted character, he has more than one iron in the fire - in this case, he's hatched his own unusual plan to rescue/kidnap/steal the Elgin Marbles and return them to his beloved adopted homeland, Greece.

As usual, Joan Smith's writing is entertaining, especially if you're a fan of hers which I most certainly am.
